ANSWERS
THE UWC SCHOLARSHIP: GENERALITIES
What is the UWC Scholarship?
A scholarship, recognised by the Ministry of Education, for students to pursue the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma at United World Colleges (UWCs) overseas.
How many scholarships are awarded?
This year 4 scholarships will be awarded. Atlantic College will NOT be offering one this year.
Where do scholars get to go?
The scholarships are tenable at the UWCs in Canada, Wales, Norway, New Mexico and Italy. While selected scholars will be able to state a preference, the final decision rests with the Selection Committee.
Is there a bond to serve?
There is no bond attached to the UWC scholarship.
What does the UWC Scholarship cover?
Covers everything related to study, for example, textbooks, accommodation, food etc. during term time. Does not cover personal expenses and airfare.

THE UWC SCHOLARSHIP: APPLYING & SELECTION
How do I apply? What is the application process?
Submit your application forms by 23th October 2006. The National
Selection Committee then shortlists the number of applicants to be called
for the 1st personal interview, to be held in December 2006 (tentative).
This process of shortlisting continues for the 2nd and 3rd personal interviews,
to be held in early 2007.
What are the criteria to apply? How important are academics?
You should be sixteen or seventeen this year, and in the final year
of secondary school. Singaporean males who apply must ensure that they
are not older than seventeen years six months by September 2006. This
is due to MINDEF rulings. In any case, we do not wish to let the age factor
deter anyone from applying. Contact us for clarification. Academics are
important but not the whole story. We are looking for people who can contribute
fully to the UWC movement and the ideals it stands for. For more information
on the United World Colleges, visit www.uwc.org.
Who is eligible for the UWC Scholarship?
The students selected would have just completed their ‘O’
Levels. The scholarships are not based solely on academic performance.
All interested students are invited to apply. Non-Singaporeans and non-Singaporean-PRs
studying in Singapore can still apply, but will have to write to the International
Office in London to apply via the International Quota (IQ) System. The
IQ system is especially for students who are ineligible to apply via the
National Committee in the country they reside in, and for students from
countries without a National Committee. Write to the International Office
in London: uwcsingapore@gmail.com.
First year students at JC are also eligible to apply.
I
just received my O-level results. Can I still apply for entry this year
(to begin 2006)?
No. Applications for entry into this year's batch are closed.
I am taking my O levels this year. Can I apply for entry next year?
Yes. Applications will be open starting from August 2006 (to be confirmed).
Application forms can be obtained from the receptionist in UWCSEA from
then on. Or download it here.
When will I be notified?
If successful, you will be notified after the release of your ‘O’ Level results, when the first three months of your Junior College/Pre-University have passed.
When do I start?
If successful, you will start your classes at one of the colleges
in August or September 2007.
When does my UWC education end?
Those selected this year will complete their course of study in May
2009.
Are there any special considerations for male/female students?
Male students would then have to return to Singapore for National Service.
Female students who choose to continue their studies at overseas universities would enter university in late 2007, having applied for conditional entry (pending I.B. results) in late 2006.
Female students who choose to return to Singapore would enter the National University of Singapore in 2007 as NUS does not offer conditional entry (based on predicted IB grades). Application to NUS is possible only after the release of the official IB results.
I’m Singaporean and would like to apply for the various university scholarships available. How would a UWC education affect my chances?
ALL Singaporean UWC graduates are still eligible to apply for scholarships offered by various local governmental and private organisations (e.g. the Public Service Commission, Singapore Airlines and EDB) just like their Junior College counterparts.
How can I
find out more about the scholarship?
You can pick up a brochure from the receptionist at UWCSEA, or visit
www.uwc.org and www.ibo.org. You can also email the UWC Singapore National
Committee at uwcsingapore@gmail.com (or click on "contact").
Will there be any presentations where I can attend and learn more about the scholarship?
Yes. This year, there will be a big presentation August 28, 1:45pm at UWCSEA Dover Road Small Hall. You, your friends, and your family are encouraged to come and listen. We may also be visiting your school. Your CCG/career counselors in your school will be informed of the dates later on in the year -- ask them for more details.

Weak knee...
oh no.. i'm neglecting my blog once again. recently have been fairly occupied, with my spanish oral test approaching and my new found addiction to online games on the cartoonnetwork.com website! though i haf to admit that they're not as challenging or tenious than other kinds of games, but they are definitely a great way to pass time! go try them out when you guys are bored yeah ;)
found myself a few part time jobs too. today was my first day of work at the charles and keith sale at jurong point and, man, that was TIRING! i stood for 11 hours (minus the 45min lunch break we were given) and we had to constantly go on our knees to find new stocks of shoes for the customers.. now my left knee feels like it is splitting.. haiz how weak. might be cos of an old injury, im not sure. how glad i am to be back in room now! poor ale, gotta stand for another 11 hours in that seemingly air-con-less shopping mall tml! trust me, the constant stream of shoppers contributed to enough body heat to make me perpsire in the shopping mall!
shall now drag myself downstairs to collect my laundry and then i shall haf my well deserved night of beauty sleep. good night everyone!~ Buenas noches!
