THE UWC SCHOLARSHIP: GENERALITIES
What is the UWC Scholarship?
A scholarship, recognised by the Ministry of Education, for students to pursue the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma at United World Colleges (UWCs) overseas.
How many scholarships are awarded?
This year 4 scholarships will be awarded. Atlantic College will NOT be offering one this year.
Where do scholars get to go?
The scholarships are tenable at the UWCs in Canada, Wales, Norway, New Mexico and Italy. While selected scholars will be able to state a preference, the final decision rests with the Selection Committee.
Is there a bond to serve?
There is no bond attached to the UWC scholarship.
What does the UWC Scholarship cover?
Covers everything related to study, for example, textbooks, accommodation, food etc. during term time. Does not cover personal expenses and airfare.

THE UWC SCHOLARSHIP: APPLYING & SELECTION
How do I apply? What is the application process?
Submit your application forms by 23th October 2006. The National
Selection Committee then shortlists the number of applicants to be called
for the 1st personal interview, to be held in December 2006 (tentative).
This process of shortlisting continues for the 2nd and 3rd personal interviews,
to be held in early 2007.
What are the criteria to apply? How important are academics?
You should be sixteen or seventeen this year, and in the final year
of secondary school. Singaporean males who apply must ensure that they
are not older than seventeen years six months by September 2006. This
is due to MINDEF rulings. In any case, we do not wish to let the age factor
deter anyone from applying. Contact us for clarification. Academics are
important but not the whole story. We are looking for people who can contribute
fully to the UWC movement and the ideals it stands for. For more information
on the United World Colleges, visit www.uwc.org.
Who is eligible for the UWC Scholarship?
The students selected would have just completed their ‘O’
Levels. The scholarships are not based solely on academic performance.
All interested students are invited to apply. Non-Singaporeans and non-Singaporean-PRs
studying in Singapore can still apply, but will have to write to the International
Office in London to apply via the International Quota (IQ) System. The
IQ system is especially for students who are ineligible to apply via the
National Committee in the country they reside in, and for students from
countries without a National Committee. Write to the International Office
in London: uwcsingapore@gmail.com.
First year students at JC are also eligible to apply.
I
just received my O-level results. Can I still apply for entry this year
(to begin 2006)?
No. Applications for entry into this year's batch are closed.
I am taking my O levels this year. Can I apply for entry next year?
Yes. Applications will be open starting from August 2006 (to be confirmed).
Application forms can be obtained from the receptionist in UWCSEA from
then on. Or download it here.
When will I be notified?
If successful, you will be notified after the release of your ‘O’ Level results, when the first three months of your Junior College/Pre-University have passed.
When do I start?
If successful, you will start your classes at one of the colleges
in August or September 2007.
When does my UWC education end?
Those selected this year will complete their course of study in May
2009.
Are there any special considerations for male/female students?
Male students would then have to return to Singapore for National Service.
Female students who choose to continue their studies at overseas universities would enter university in late 2007, having applied for conditional entry (pending I.B. results) in late 2006.
Female students who choose to return to Singapore would enter the National University of Singapore in 2007 as NUS does not offer conditional entry (based on predicted IB grades). Application to NUS is possible only after the release of the official IB results.
I’m Singaporean and would like to apply for the various university scholarships available. How would a UWC education affect my chances?
ALL Singaporean UWC graduates are still eligible to apply for scholarships offered by various local governmental and private organisations (e.g. the Public Service Commission, Singapore Airlines and EDB) just like their Junior College counterparts.
How can I
find out more about the scholarship?
You can pick up a brochure from the receptionist at UWCSEA, or visit
www.uwc.org and www.ibo.org. You can also email the UWC Singapore National
Committee at uwcsingapore@gmail.com (or click on "contact").
Will there be any presentations where I can attend and learn more about the scholarship?
Yes. This year, there will be a big presentation August 28, 1:45pm at UWCSEA Dover Road Small Hall. You, your friends, and your family are encouraged to come and listen. We may also be visiting your school. Your CCG/career counselors in your school will be informed of the dates later on in the year -- ask them for more details.

Cash-less?!?!
Pardon the sorta lame title. Wad i reallie mean is that today my dog, cash, nearly went missing, for a second time. (ha i noe how money-faced we must have seem for naming our doggy 'cash', but its not really my idea. initially when my bro suggested the name i thot he meant 'kesh', which is kinda cool. and-digression-there was one day i brought cash down for a walk and came across a girl also walking her doggie. so as usual, the two dogs got really excited when they saw each other and dashed towards each other. then i heard the girl calling 'cash, cash' initially thot she knew my dog (given how popular he is ard my neighbourhood) but ends up her dog is called cash too haha.. wad a common name)
anw, so ya, my dog ran away again. but this time its cause of something very stupid. my dad, in the attempt to prove to me how 'disciplined' cash is, unleashed him at the lift, claiming the doggie will obediently wait with us for the lift to come. but as expected, the doggie dashed away at max speed immediately after being unleashed. i was horrified. within the matter of a few seconds, cash was outta my sight. you noe how fast doggies are. trust me, i tried jogging with him before, and just couldn't seem to keep up with him. yeah yeah mayb cos of my lousey stamina la.
oops digressed again.
ya so i was so angry with my dad for releasing him, esp. after i told him NOT to, as i din really trust cash to be that obedient, as he haven undergone any kinda training b4. so the two of us were looking all over for cash, and i was WORRIED SICK. then i thot of somewhere where cash might go, cos everytime we bring it down, it will wanna go to that place. it is the park across the road. but it's quite a distance from my house. i went there anyway. and to cut long story short, i was looking all over for cash at the park, when i saw this cat sorta tense up at the void deck beside the park, and suspect cash might be there. cats always tense up when cash is near, and they look like they are doing yoga when they get tensed up, with the arched back and all. ha.. so yappari cash was there. and when he saw me he sorta stopped for 2 seconds. but when i approached he started running off again.
which made me very angry. not really at cash, but at ourselves, for not having trained him well. some doggies can walk beside their owners, unleashed, and stop when their owners ask them to. Not cash. no matter how to scream your lungs out at him, he will not bother.
then i remembered something i read from the book i borrowed from the library titled "Train your dog, change your life" (haha i need that man), and remembered it said when you wanna show your doggie that you're angry, turn your back towards it and walk away. i did exactly that, and it worked! cash came running after me, then overtook me, and headed for the road. i stared with horror. i know how 'vehicles-blind' cash is. he just dun watch out for cars. and he din this time round either. he nearly got knocked down by a truck right before my eyes. thank god he managed to cross to the other side safely.
so on the other side of the road i just stood where he could see me. really, if you wanna catch a doggy, dun run after it, cos it'll happily run off thinking you're playing with it. in the end cash, seemingly satisfied with the day's adventures, came obediently to me, before i took it into my arms and give it one tight smack on the butt.
we seriously need to train cash! who has experience in that? pls teach me! alternatively i can consult "train your dog, change your life" haha, but i think a real life example will be better. so anyone who has tips about how to train doggies to recognise their owner and listen to their commands, do teach me pls!!
