ANSWERS
THE UWC SCHOLARSHIP: GENERALITIES
What is the UWC Scholarship?
A scholarship, recognised by the Ministry of Education, for students to pursue the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma at United World Colleges (UWCs) overseas.
How many scholarships are awarded?
This year 4 scholarships will be awarded. Atlantic College will NOT be offering one this year.
Where do scholars get to go?
The scholarships are tenable at the UWCs in Canada, Wales, Norway, New Mexico and Italy. While selected scholars will be able to state a preference, the final decision rests with the Selection Committee.
Is there a bond to serve?
There is no bond attached to the UWC scholarship.
What does the UWC Scholarship cover?
Covers everything related to study, for example, textbooks, accommodation, food etc. during term time. Does not cover personal expenses and airfare.

THE UWC SCHOLARSHIP: APPLYING & SELECTION
How do I apply? What is the application process?
Submit your application forms by 23th October 2006. The National
Selection Committee then shortlists the number of applicants to be called
for the 1st personal interview, to be held in December 2006 (tentative).
This process of shortlisting continues for the 2nd and 3rd personal interviews,
to be held in early 2007.
What are the criteria to apply? How important are academics?
You should be sixteen or seventeen this year, and in the final year
of secondary school. Singaporean males who apply must ensure that they
are not older than seventeen years six months by September 2006. This
is due to MINDEF rulings. In any case, we do not wish to let the age factor
deter anyone from applying. Contact us for clarification. Academics are
important but not the whole story. We are looking for people who can contribute
fully to the UWC movement and the ideals it stands for. For more information
on the United World Colleges, visit www.uwc.org.
Who is eligible for the UWC Scholarship?
The students selected would have just completed their ‘O’
Levels. The scholarships are not based solely on academic performance.
All interested students are invited to apply. Non-Singaporeans and non-Singaporean-PRs
studying in Singapore can still apply, but will have to write to the International
Office in London to apply via the International Quota (IQ) System. The
IQ system is especially for students who are ineligible to apply via the
National Committee in the country they reside in, and for students from
countries without a National Committee. Write to the International Office
in London: uwcsingapore@gmail.com.
First year students at JC are also eligible to apply.
I
just received my O-level results. Can I still apply for entry this year
(to begin 2006)?
No. Applications for entry into this year's batch are closed.
I am taking my O levels this year. Can I apply for entry next year?
Yes. Applications will be open starting from August 2006 (to be confirmed).
Application forms can be obtained from the receptionist in UWCSEA from
then on. Or download it here.
When will I be notified?
If successful, you will be notified after the release of your ‘O’ Level results, when the first three months of your Junior College/Pre-University have passed.
When do I start?
If successful, you will start your classes at one of the colleges
in August or September 2007.
When does my UWC education end?
Those selected this year will complete their course of study in May
2009.
Are there any special considerations for male/female students?
Male students would then have to return to Singapore for National Service.
Female students who choose to continue their studies at overseas universities would enter university in late 2007, having applied for conditional entry (pending I.B. results) in late 2006.
Female students who choose to return to Singapore would enter the National University of Singapore in 2007 as NUS does not offer conditional entry (based on predicted IB grades). Application to NUS is possible only after the release of the official IB results.
I’m Singaporean and would like to apply for the various university scholarships available. How would a UWC education affect my chances?
ALL Singaporean UWC graduates are still eligible to apply for scholarships offered by various local governmental and private organisations (e.g. the Public Service Commission, Singapore Airlines and EDB) just like their Junior College counterparts.
How can I
find out more about the scholarship?
You can pick up a brochure from the receptionist at UWCSEA, or visit
www.uwc.org and www.ibo.org. You can also email the UWC Singapore National
Committee at uwcsingapore@gmail.com (or click on "contact").
Will there be any presentations where I can attend and learn more about the scholarship?
Yes. This year, there will be a big presentation August 28, 1:45pm at UWCSEA Dover Road Small Hall. You, your friends, and your family are encouraged to come and listen. We may also be visiting your school. Your CCG/career counselors in your school will be informed of the dates later on in the year -- ask them for more details.

old chinese fighting dramas are...
one word - gory. i've found a trend in them.. while current chinese fighting shows tend to be more comic-like - a fist here, a sword there, some bloodshed, some blood-puking from the mouth, some limping, they tend to appear more played down.. more acceptable by pple with weak hearts, like me.
on the other hand, if you've watched old wu3xia2 dramas like shui2hu3zuan4 (tt was prob filmed more than 10yrs ago), which is showing currently on channel 8, every thursday night at 1130pm(i think), you'll b most likely to find that somehow or other, they tend to show the whole fighting process, the whole bleeding, the whole pain, the whole dying. Besides gory, i can only say gory! It is as gruesome as..... happytreefriends? really, except for the fact that happytreefriends usu mask the actual suffering, making it seem as if getting your hands chopped off is juz as painful as an ant bite(and they can even end off the cartoon with the cheerful 'lalalala' tune!), and of cos the fact tt it's animated. shows like shui2hu3zuan4 on the other hand, can sometimes depict the whole dying process. yee err..
its really very sadist leh, to give some e.g.s, (WARNING! if you cant take gory, or if you have too good an imagination, do NOT proceed beyond this point.) there was one time they showed wu3song1(a guy character's name if you dunno) killed a few bad people by decapitating them. Then they showed the heads of the deads - without the bodies! - being placed together in a room... o_0
another time they showed this wu3song1 guy going to an ulu drinking inn for some wine, and the owner of the inn is actually a cannibal, so she have these 2 or 3 strong and burly guy assistants whom she employed to capture the customers. Wu3song1 however, somehow escaped the misfortune and went to the back kitchen to save those other customers who had been captured. Then wad happened at the back kitchen was these 2 or 3 guy assistants had laid the customers on some stone bed, tied them, were cleaning up their bodies, polishing their butcher knives, and preparing to chop them into yummy pieces! o_0
wah.. im grossed up myself.. luckily my skill at describing is not tt good haha... anw, to give another final e.g, juz to reinforce my point, juz now when i was watching there was this scene where a guy was badly injured(man they used the artificial blood like nothing in those days!) and was lying down on a bed while this other man was SAWING one of his legs tt had probably gone beyond hope... o_o aniwae, will chopping be a better choice? since the suffering wun be tt long.. hmmm..
dun ask me why i still watch the show though i find it very gross.. i have no choice but to take in some of the scenes, because the show is always on on my tv every thurs nite.. my dad is addicted to the show! juz like how my younger cousins are addicted to happytreefriends... dunno why these shows can always come up with such innovative and gruesome way of dying.. AND WHY ARE PEOPLE LIKING IT SO MUCH?
beats me.. mayb there's a sadist side in everyone of us..
