ANSWERS
THE UWC SCHOLARSHIP: GENERALITIES
What is the UWC Scholarship?
A scholarship, recognised by the Ministry of Education, for students to pursue the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma at United World Colleges (UWCs) overseas.
How many scholarships are awarded?
This year 4 scholarships will be awarded. Atlantic College will NOT be offering one this year.
Where do scholars get to go?
The scholarships are tenable at the UWCs in Canada, Wales, Norway, New Mexico and Italy. While selected scholars will be able to state a preference, the final decision rests with the Selection Committee.
Is there a bond to serve?
There is no bond attached to the UWC scholarship.
What does the UWC Scholarship cover?
Covers everything related to study, for example, textbooks, accommodation, food etc. during term time. Does not cover personal expenses and airfare.

THE UWC SCHOLARSHIP: APPLYING & SELECTION
How do I apply? What is the application process?
Submit your application forms by 23th October 2006. The National
Selection Committee then shortlists the number of applicants to be called
for the 1st personal interview, to be held in December 2006 (tentative).
This process of shortlisting continues for the 2nd and 3rd personal interviews,
to be held in early 2007.
What are the criteria to apply? How important are academics?
You should be sixteen or seventeen this year, and in the final year
of secondary school. Singaporean males who apply must ensure that they
are not older than seventeen years six months by September 2006. This
is due to MINDEF rulings. In any case, we do not wish to let the age factor
deter anyone from applying. Contact us for clarification. Academics are
important but not the whole story. We are looking for people who can contribute
fully to the UWC movement and the ideals it stands for. For more information
on the United World Colleges, visit www.uwc.org.
Who is eligible for the UWC Scholarship?
The students selected would have just completed their ‘O’
Levels. The scholarships are not based solely on academic performance.
All interested students are invited to apply. Non-Singaporeans and non-Singaporean-PRs
studying in Singapore can still apply, but will have to write to the International
Office in London to apply via the International Quota (IQ) System. The
IQ system is especially for students who are ineligible to apply via the
National Committee in the country they reside in, and for students from
countries without a National Committee. Write to the International Office
in London: uwcsingapore@gmail.com.
First year students at JC are also eligible to apply.
I
just received my O-level results. Can I still apply for entry this year
(to begin 2006)?
No. Applications for entry into this year's batch are closed.
I am taking my O levels this year. Can I apply for entry next year?
Yes. Applications will be open starting from August 2006 (to be confirmed).
Application forms can be obtained from the receptionist in UWCSEA from
then on. Or download it here.
When will I be notified?
If successful, you will be notified after the release of your ‘O’ Level results, when the first three months of your Junior College/Pre-University have passed.
When do I start?
If successful, you will start your classes at one of the colleges
in August or September 2007.
When does my UWC education end?
Those selected this year will complete their course of study in May
2009.
Are there any special considerations for male/female students?
Male students would then have to return to Singapore for National Service.
Female students who choose to continue their studies at overseas universities would enter university in late 2007, having applied for conditional entry (pending I.B. results) in late 2006.
Female students who choose to return to Singapore would enter the National University of Singapore in 2007 as NUS does not offer conditional entry (based on predicted IB grades). Application to NUS is possible only after the release of the official IB results.
I’m Singaporean and would like to apply for the various university scholarships available. How would a UWC education affect my chances?
ALL Singaporean UWC graduates are still eligible to apply for scholarships offered by various local governmental and private organisations (e.g. the Public Service Commission, Singapore Airlines and EDB) just like their Junior College counterparts.
How can I
find out more about the scholarship?
You can pick up a brochure from the receptionist at UWCSEA, or visit
www.uwc.org and www.ibo.org. You can also email the UWC Singapore National
Committee at uwcsingapore@gmail.com (or click on "contact").
Will there be any presentations where I can attend and learn more about the scholarship?
Yes. This year, there will be a big presentation August 28, 1:45pm at UWCSEA Dover Road Small Hall. You, your friends, and your family are encouraged to come and listen. We may also be visiting your school. Your CCG/career counselors in your school will be informed of the dates later on in the year -- ask them for more details.

Argh.. motivated to work hard and buy a unit there! But by the time i am able to do so.. maplewoods' probably gona b very very old... haha.. cj said if im living there i probably wun b tt crazy about it.. mayb. Mayb its not tt great actually.. but from how i see it from the outside, despite my thirst, my hunger, my fatigue, i was so overwhlemed by the beauty of it all, it must be good! I dunno, somebody, if you live there, pls pls pls invite me to your house, pls! And you shld noe how lucky you are to be able to wake up, draw the curtains, listen to the birds' chirping, see the dew drop on the leaves and breathe in the refreshing oxygen everyday in the morning.
Oh my gaWd.. foUnd my dReam hOme..
so something good can turn out from the poor luck of having alighted 5 busstops before i shld and taking a full 30mins to walk the distance to my destination.
oh well, you can say i had it coming myself, for making the bad decision that 5 busstops ain't tt far and that I shld b able to reach KAP pretty fast. So there i was, on a hot sweltering saturday afternoon, in my black top(black, ABSORB HEAT) and sweat-trapping long pants, carrying my bulky laptop on one hand and bag on the other, patiently going in the direction of KAP mac, oblivious to the distance that's awaiting me. 3 busstops later, I was tired, sweating like a pig, confused, aimless, not even sure if where i thot i was going is really where i wanna go.(mind you, i haven't set foot into KAP mac before, given the mountain tortoise i am, and tt im neither a hcjc nor an njcian who can claim bukit timah road as her di4 pan2.)
Yes, i was panting, i was perspiring, i was longing for that frizzy coke and cripsy fries and the aircon that's awaiting me at Mac, but shitty as my journey was, there was actually something i was enjoying.
I REALISED HOW WONDERFUL THE HOUSES ALONG BUKIT TIMAH ROAD WERE. Were i on the bus, i might not have noticed the greenery, the peace, the solidly gorgeous buildings that stood in the bukit timah neighbourhood. I was oooing and ahhing to myself as i walk along, there was something there that spells 'homeliness'.
And when i was at my 3rd stop, i saw it -- my dream home. Named maplewoods. Some of you might have known it, but for me, i was only seeing it for the first time in my life. It wasn't a bungalow with a private pool, not even a terrace. It was a condo, a condo that was so splendidly surrounded by trees and greenery that i couldn't stop but be totally marvelled by it all. As i was admiring it, i knew wad it reminded me of -- those ang moh houses we see on tv. No, not those houses that we usually see in hollywood movies, but you noe, sometimes when you on the tv on a lazy wednesday afternoon(like 2/3pm), you'll see those super unappealing cooking shows on channel 5, where this guy or lady would b demonstrating the cooking procedures of a particular dish, and you can clearly see its shot in a kitchen(whether its real kitchen or those fake ones in a studio i dunno), and in the backdrop you can see some windows, with leaves and plants outside peeking in.
Leaves and plants outside peeking in. That's the thing. Amidst the trees and surrounded the houses, i saw windows, some partially hidden by the leaves, some overlooking the trees. And then my heart melted. Imagine waking up in the morning, you pulled open the curtains, and heard birds chirping and dew drops on tree leaves. You den take in a deep deep breathe, taking in the abundance of oxygen that the trees provide for its environment. Heavenly.
I walked abit further, and saw something else, something tt made it all even better. Behing the security house, which is like sorta made of wood or something(so much of nature!), i saw some orangey lights and lit up some pathways. Along the pathway, there were lotsa palm trees too. Try as much as my short neck allowed, i couldnt see wad's beyond tt, but i seriously suspected it hafta be something good. I adore maplewoods! I love it!
And ive been thinking of it ever since. Juz went online and search for the pictures.. they are good, but the actual thing's much betta. :) here they are.. loveitloveit!
