ANSWERS THE UWC SCHOLARSHIP: GENERALITIES
What is the UWC Scholarship?
A scholarship, recognised by the Ministry of Education, for students to pursue the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma at United World Colleges (UWCs) overseas.
How many scholarships are awarded?
This year 4 scholarships will be awarded. Atlantic College will NOT be offering one this year.
Where do scholars get to go?
The scholarships are tenable at the UWCs in Canada, Wales, Norway, New Mexico and Italy. While selected scholars will be able to state a preference, the final decision rests with the Selection Committee.
Is there a bond to serve?
There is no bond attached to the UWC scholarship.
What does the UWC Scholarship cover?
Covers everything related to study, for example, textbooks, accommodation, food etc. during term time. Does not cover personal expenses and airfare.
THE UWC SCHOLARSHIP: APPLYING & SELECTION
How do I apply? What is the application process?
Submit your application forms by 23th October 2006. The National
Selection Committee then shortlists the number of applicants to be called
for the 1st personal interview, to be held in December 2006 (tentative).
This process of shortlisting continues for the 2nd and 3rd personal interviews,
to be held in early 2007.
What are the criteria to apply? How important are academics?
You should be sixteen or seventeen this year, and in the final year
of secondary school. Singaporean males who apply must ensure that they
are not older than seventeen years six months by September 2006. This
is due to MINDEF rulings. In any case, we do not wish to let the age factor
deter anyone from applying. Contact us for clarification. Academics are
important but not the whole story. We are looking for people who can contribute
fully to the UWC movement and the ideals it stands for. For more information
on the United World Colleges, visit www.uwc.org.
Who is eligible for the UWC Scholarship?
The students selected would have just completed their ‘O’
Levels. The scholarships are not based solely on academic performance.
All interested students are invited to apply. Non-Singaporeans and non-Singaporean-PRs
studying in Singapore can still apply, but will have to write to the International
Office in London to apply via the International Quota (IQ) System. The
IQ system is especially for students who are ineligible to apply via the
National Committee in the country they reside in, and for students from
countries without a National Committee. Write to the International Office
in London: uwcsingapore@gmail.com.
First year students at JC are also eligible to apply.
I
just received my O-level results. Can I still apply for entry this year
(to begin 2006)?
No. Applications for entry into this year's batch are closed.
I am taking my O levels this year. Can I apply for entry next year?
Yes. Applications will be open starting from August 2006 (to be confirmed).
Application forms can be obtained from the receptionist in UWCSEA from
then on. Or download it here.
When will I be notified?
If successful, you will be notified after the release of your ‘O’ Level results, when the first three months of your Junior College/Pre-University have passed.
When do I start?
If successful, you will start your classes at one of the colleges
in August or September 2007.
When does my UWC education end?
Those selected this year will complete their course of study in May
2009.
Are there any special considerations for male/female students?
Male students would then have to return to Singapore for National Service.
Female students who choose to continue their studies at overseas universities would enter university in late 2007, having applied for conditional entry (pending I.B. results) in late 2006.
Female students who choose to return to Singapore would enter the National University of Singapore in 2007 as NUS does not offer conditional entry (based on predicted IB grades). Application to NUS is possible only after the release of the official IB results.
I’m Singaporean and would like to apply for the various university scholarships available. How would a UWC education affect my chances?
ALL Singaporean UWC graduates are still eligible to apply for scholarships offered by various local governmental and private organisations (e.g. the Public Service Commission, Singapore Airlines and EDB) just like their Junior College counterparts.
How can I
find out more about the scholarship?
You can pick up a brochure from the receptionist at UWCSEA, or visit
www.uwc.org and www.ibo.org. You can also email the UWC Singapore National
Committee at uwcsingapore@gmail.com (or click on "contact").
Will there be any presentations where I can attend and learn more about the scholarship?
Yes. This year, there will be a big presentation August 28, 1:45pm at UWCSEA Dover Road Small Hall. You, your friends, and your family are encouraged to come and listen. We may also be visiting your school. Your CCG/career counselors in your school will be informed of the dates later on in the year -- ask them for more details.

The gals! Me and the boys (from left: jh, me, top:kai yuan, bottom: chris) Me trying it out! The apple flavor was not very strong. Michelle taking a puff Kai yuan the ex smoker. Jh the ex smoker number 2. Roonie the non-smoker(as we can tell haha) And finally Chris, the non-smoker who looks every bit like a compulsive smoker haha. He was totally enjoying himself, in that position and all. Looks abit like opium smoker though, no? haha.. After that we headed to marina south ktv cum pubbing. The night was still young. haha... played bridge while drinking and singing ktv. The place was quite nice and cozy.. great place to hang out with friends at night. Had a bacardi breezer and a glassful of foster's beer as punishment for losing bridge. -bleah- Oh ya, and there was a guy who could sing very well. He kept challenging the si4 da4 tian1 wang2 with his canto songs.. not bad, his voice is good enuf to compete with them i think heh.. After the pubbing session (after which Chris totally concussed cos of sleepiness) we headed to the railway station for supper. I din even noe of this place till Roonie suggested it. The food was very yummy! Buy by then me and michelle were very full (from the free flow of nuts at the ktv place) so we just kop-ed the boys' bee hoon goreng and mee soto. Meanwhile, Chris was dozing off in Jh's car hahaha.. poor him. Must be really tired. And that rounded up our outing for tt night. Must go for another outing soon k guys! In Chris' words, shisha - $10++, foster's beer - $20++, peanuts -- free flow, mee soto -- $2.50, Great night out - Priceless.
Great night out
A slight departure from my usual entries on my thots and feelings about stuff, this entry will be a recap of what I did last thurs. (And loads of pictures to show too) In one word, the outing was superb. Great food, great smoke, great songs, great game, great company. :)
It has been so long since I last had this sort of outing, and I really did welcome this short break from my endless assignments and projects.
Went out to arab street shortly after the mid autumn celebration in hall. At 10.30pm, michelle, kai yuan, chris, jiehan and me started our road trip in jiehan's car. Roonie was going by bike and would meet us there.
It was the first time i go to arab street so late at night. Some of the shops were still opened though, and Michelle showed me a shop which sells vintage dresses and clothes. We didn't have time to go in though.. but I'll definitely go there next time. Though we could only look into the shop from the car we were traveling in, I could spot some really retro and pretty dresses inside! Great buys for a great mambo night i'll say. :D
Den we reach our destination - This turkish restaurant which offers wad we were looking for -- shisha. Its a kind of tobacco that is flavoured. Still contain the harmful substances but i think not as unhealthy cos its filtered.

Dance dance!
These few days I've been pretty looking forward to dance classes at studio wu. Previously, going to studio wu for dance classes was a fun experience, but not quite inspiring. I had been having this mindset that since studio wu teaches dance steps, not really the technique, I cant possibly learn and improve much from the classes. It'll be just a routine of going there and trying to catch up with the instructor, and also trying hard to remember the steps from start to end, without focusing on how to improve each individual step and move. After all, how much can you learn within an hour?
But that day after my lesson, I lingered around just to watch an advanced beginners class. The people in there are so so good at dance! The steps seem pretty complicating, and the beats were super fast. Yet most of them could do it so well. Though each were doing it in slightly different ways, but each has her own groove and style. And I wondered to myself: Will I ever be able to become that good? I wasn't confident about tt, but that day I left feeling more inspired about dance than ever.
And since that day, going to studio wu was a completely diff feeling from before. I go there thinking that I can improve from the lessons. And somehow, I paid particular attention during the class haha... And i realise, I actually can remember all the steps! (which is really an improvement from previously, when I had trouble even in remembering wad steps come next hmph )
That's a small improvement i suppose.. and I wanna improve more! My package ending soon though.. but think I'll continue with it this coming hols.
Somehow i think going to lessons at studio wu alone is not so bad after all. When i go alone, I feel more urge to learn than when i go with friends. Hmm.. mayb i got nobody to talk to so i pay more attention? heh.. anw, im just starting to appreciate spending time by myself, which, to me, is not necceassarily a bad thing.
